October 26-27, 2017 Training Event – LGBTQI Youth: Queer Criminology, Building Safety and Legal Updates
Cost to attend is $25 for Juvenile Justice Vision 20/20 members, $10 for all students, and $50 for non-members. Additional membership information is available at: https://www.gvsu.edu/juvenilejusticevision2020/join-us-3.htm .
Within the United States as a whole, and certainly within the juvenile justice community, issues surrounding LGBTQI people are coming to light at a rapid pace. In an effort to address the growing number of questions regarding treatment and placement of this population, the Juvenile Justice Vision 20/20 Executive Team is pleased to present “LGBTQI Youth: Queer Criminology, Building Safety and Legal Updates”. At this training event, participants will have an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the issues facing LGBTQI youth, their role in the juvenile justice system, and will be provided tangible treatment resources. Please note: While the overarching theme of this training is related to the information presented during the June Training event, this is an entirely separate training. A basic review of the language and terms may be presented, but overlap of content with earlier training material will be limited. 8:00 a.m. – Conference registration begins
8:45 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. – Welcome by emcee Kevin Bowling and Dr. Paul Stansbie, Associate Dean of the Grand Valley State University College of Community and Public Service
9:00 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. – Keynote address, Queer Criminology , presented by Dr. Carrie Buist and Dr. Emily Lenning
In the keynote presentation, participants will explore the origins of Queer Criminology, survey the foundational research and scholarship in this emerging field, and offer suggestions for the future. Topics covered will include the criminalization of queerness, the policing of Queer communities, Queer experiences in the courtroom, and the correctional control of Queer people.
1:30 p.m. – 2:45 p.m. – Plenary session, LGBTQ Youth and the Criminal Legal System, presented by Dr. Carrie Buist and Dr. Emily Lenning
This session will introduce the issues facing LGBTQ youth involved in the criminal legal system. Activities and discussion will be used to highlight the over criminalization of LGBTQ youth and its consequences, and to explore avenues for social justice.
2:45 p.m. – 3:15 p.m. – Break
3:15 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. – Plenary session, Legal Update, presented by Tracey Brame, JD and Ayda Rezaian-Nojani, JD.
During this plenary, Cooley Law School Professor Tracey Brame and Staff Attorney of the Cooley Innocence Project Ayda Rezaian-Nojani will provide an update of juvenile justice legal changes from 2016 and 2017, including recent changes to the minor in possession statute and Raise the Age legislation updates and impacts.

9:00 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. – Plenary session, Building Safety with Youth and Families: Recognizing and Affirming SOGIE, presented by Jessie Fullenkamp, LMSW
This presentation will examine why and how to work with families who have children that identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ); specifically, in the Child Welfare and Juvenile Justice systems. Participants will be provided with tools for how to contribute to preserving families while building acceptance for LGBTQ youth identity.
Whether you are working with the courts, law enforcement, DHHS, private agencies or local organizations that touch the juvenile justice system and at-risk youth, this conference will provide you with invaluable resources, ideas and encouragement.
Continuing Education Units (CEU)
CEU information is pending, but Juvenile Justice Vision 20/20 hopes to offer up to 7.5 continuing education units. An additional $10.00 will be applied at registration for interested participants. For questions, or for an update on the number of CEUs available, please contact [email protected].

Exhibitor Information:
