June 9-10 Training Event: Juvenile Justice and Mental Health - with Legal Updates!

Cost to attend is $25 for JJV2020 members, $10 for all students, and $50 for non-members.  Additional membership information is available at: https://www.gvsu.edu/juvenilejusticevision2020/join-us-3.htm .

In response to requests for professional development and feedback from previous event participants, Juvenile Justice Vision 20/20 is proud to present a training dedicated to Juvenile Justice and Mental Health.  We are also excited to welcome back Cooley Law School to provide participants with legal updates relevant to the field of juvenile justice!

Thursday, June 9, 2016

The conference will kick-off on Thursday at 8:45am.  Sandi Metcalf, MS, Juvenile Justice Vision 20/20 President, and Dr. Paul Stansbie, PhD, Associate Dean of the Grand Valley State University College of Community and Public Service, will set the stage for the conference as they share briefly about the JJV2020 effort and the juvenile justice field.

The keynote address, Understanding Mental Health in the Juvenile Justice System: Assessment, Understanding and Intervention, presented by Dr. Michael Wolff, PsyD, ABPdN, American Academy of Pediatric Neuropsychology Diplomate, will follow the opening remarks.

In the afternoon, participants will have the opportunity to attend two seminars:

Seminar 1:  Combating Compassion Fatigue, Burnout and Secondary Traumatic Stress in Juvenile Justice Staff, presented by Ann Heerde, LMSW, of Ottawa County’s Community Mental Health.

Participants will be provided an overview of compassion fatigue, burnout and secondary traumatic stress (STS).  The presentation will provide an overview of the impact of STS. Participants will be provided with an opportunity to explore strategies for addressing STS and develop a personalized plan during the presentation.

Seminar 2: Youth Mental Health in the “Real World”: Trends, Risk Factors, and Effects, presented by Dr. Robin Smith-Colton, Ph.D., LMSW, LCSW, QCSW, and Kolby Cole of the Grand Valley State University School of Social Work.

This presentation will highlight mental health issues youth currently encounter and experience in everyday life. Vulnerable youth are at a heightened risk to be impacted by the linkages between mental health, education, and the criminal justice system. By exploring these issues, this presentation seeks to raise awareness about the significance of these issues, and the importance of refocusing the perception of youth in helping them overcome the obstacles they face.

Following the workshops, all participants will return to the Loosemore Auditorium for a brief wrap-up, including a raffle provided by Juvenile Justice Vision 20/20 and event exhibitors.

Friday, June 10, 2016

On Friday, participants will gather for a brief welcome and overview, beginning at 8:45am.

The opening session will feature, Kristen Staley, JD, of the Michigan Council on Crime and Delinquency.  She will speak to the pending “Raise the Age” legislation which, if passed, will change the age of majority in the state of Michigan from 17 to 18, allowing 17-year-olds to access rehabilitative juvenile services.  Participants will have the opportunity to learn more about the legislation and its anticipated impacts.

After a brief morning break, Cooley Law School professors Tonya Krause-Phelan, JD, and Tracey Brame, JD, will provide an update of juvenile justice legal changes for 2015 and 2016.

Following this presentation, the conference will conclude with a brief closing, including a raffle sponsored by the event exhibitors.

Whether you are working with the courts, law enforcement, DHHS, private agencies or local organizations that touch the juvenile justice system and at-risk youth, this conference will provide you with invaluable resources, ideas and encouragement.
