The Grantmaking School (TGS) is a university-based, practitioner led program that teaches the techniques of effective grantmaking to foundation program officers and other grantmaking professionals. As a division of the Dorothy A. Johnson Center for Philanthropy at Grand Valley State University, The Grantmaking School’s content is academically rigorous but also highly practical. We specialize in providing professional development that is thoroughly grounded in grantmaking good practice. Our content is delivered by highly qualified philanthropic practitioners who are nationally recognized for their expertise and credentials and excel at providing our clients with a practical and in-depth learning experience.

The Grantmaking School offers national courses in the areas of proposal analysis and project management, strategic philanthropy and portfolio management, financial analysis, and evaluation.

TGS also offers customized services to select client foundations in a personalized setting, and tailored directly to the client’s professional development and organizational needs. Our curriculum is designed to provide clients with training that establishes a fundamental baseline of knowledge that calibrates teams to recognize high performance opportunities and identify the issues and challenges that face every grantmaking organization.
