Russell G. Mawby Fellowships in Philanthropic Studies

Dr. Russell G. Mawby’s generous endowed gift to the Johnson Center for Philanthropy has allowed the Johnson Center to establish the Russell G. Mawby Fellowships in Philanthropic Studies. This ongoing fellowship program honors Dr. Mawby’s lifelong devotion to nurturing, mentoring, and opening doors of opportunity for youth worldwide, as well as his quarter century of leadership in the world of philanthropy as the CEO of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, which is among the ten largest grantmaking foundations in the world.

The Mawby Fellowship provides the opportunity for one member of the Grand Valley State University teaching faculty to work with two undergraduate students on a research project addressing relevant issues related to philanthropic studies. The Mawby Faculty Fellow chooses two Undergraduate Fellows with whom she or he will work over the course of one year. The topic of the research focuses on the intersection between any field of academic study and the theory and/or practice of philanthropy.

As a result of this research, the Mawby Faculty and Undergraduate Fellows are required to produce an original, tangible product, such as a research paper, a creative work, or a thoughtful essay, which will advance the understanding of the philanthropic and/or nonprofit sector. This product is disseminated to philanthropy scholars and practitioners through an event and/or other means.

This award is open to all members of the GVSU faculty, including teaching Administrative/ Professionals and Affiliates. Undergraduate Fellows are chosen from members of the GVSU junior class.

2011 - 2012 Mawby Faculty Fellow

Jennifer Pope, associate professor of marketing in the Seidman College of Business at GVSU, was awarded the 2011-2012 Russell G. Mawby Fellowship in Philanthropic Studies. Dr. Pope plans to work on a study that develops a marketing strategy specifically targeting nonprofit organizations.

2010 - 2011 Mawby Faculty Fellow

Carol Sánchez, professor of management from GVSU's Seidman College of Business completed the second Mawby Faculty Fellowship. Sánchez's project, NGO/Business Partnerships: Meeting Needs of Customers at the Base of the Pyramid, explored the relationship of nongovernmental organizations (NGO's) that serve the poorest of the poor in the world (the "base of the pyramid") and two Grand Rapids businesses that are engaged in social innovation to assist this group of people.

Mawby Fellowship undergraduate student assistants, Tim DuBois and Stephanie Ly, were selected by Dr. Sanchez for this project.

2008 - 2010 Mawby Faculty Fellow

Gleaves Whitney, director of the Hauenstein Center for Presidential Studies, completed the first Mawby Faculty Fellowship with a project deemed Philanthropy and the Presidency. His research examined the role philanthropy played in the administrations of Herbert Hoover and John F. Kennedy.

Student assistants for this project include: Brian Flanagan, graduate student, Heather Landis, undergraduate student, and Tara Feenstra, undergraduate student.

Whitney presented his Fellowship research during The American Presidency and Philanthropy Since the Civil War conference on September 16-17, 2010 on Grand Valley State University's Pew Campus.  The video below highlights Whitney's discussion during the conference.  You can watch all the videos from the conference here.
