Professional Development

The Johnson Center for Philanthropy provides education and training in the areas of data management, board certification, grantmaking and philanthropy, and nonprofit management and leadership.

Board Certification

The Nonprofit Board Certificate Program offers guidance and guidelines for those serving or planning to serve on nonprofit boards. Our program defines the roles and responsibilities involved in serving on a board of directors promoting the challenge of becoming and effective board member.

Our goal is to provide organizations with access to a pool of effective and educated potential board members who will enhance their organization's governance, further enhancing the experiences of other nonprofit board members.

Data Management

Our Community Research Institute gathers, analyzes, interprets, and shares national, and local data through partnerships with nonprofit and neighborhood groups in an effort to assist local and regional nonprofit leaders with decision making, grant writing, and program evaluation. To parallel their community work, the Community Research Institute has created the Nonprofit and Data:  A How-to Series for nonprofit and foundation practitioners.  The series, which covers topics such as data collection for grants and program development, can be downloaded from iTunesU.

Grantmaking and Philanthropy

The Grantmaking School addresses the complex work of foundation grantmaking professionals who are central to foundation effectiveness. Grantmakers play a pivotal role in assessing needs, analyzing solutions and improving lives within the communities they serve. Advanced education equips them to maximize the impact of their grantmaking in the face of increasingly complex and seemingly intractable social problems.  The Grantmaking School provides three advanced education courses: Advanced Grant Portfolio ManagementAdvanced Proposal Analysis, and Grant Financial Analysis

Nonprofit Management and Leadership

Nonprofit Services promotes good practice in the nonprofit sector by providing support, education, and information to leaders of nonprofit organizations. Education from Nonprofit Services includes workshops and seminars covering topics of timely interest to the nonprofit sector, geared toward board members, executive directors, and nonprofit staff.
