Safer Internet Day 2024: Empowering the GVSU Community for a Secure Online World

The theme for Safer Internet Day 2024 is "Empowering Digital Citizens." The theme underscores the need for active engagement by Grand Valley State University faculty, staff, and students.

Here are some key areas to focus on as we celebrate Safer Internet Day 2024:

  1. Digital Literacy: Knowledge is the most effective defense against online threats. Empower yourself with the skills and understanding needed to navigate the internet safely. Stay informed about cybersecurity trends, privacy settings, and online scams. By educating ourselves and others, we can build a more resilient digital community.

  2. Privacy Protection: Your personal information is valuable. Take proactive measures to safeguard it. Review privacy settings on social media platforms and other online accounts regularly. Be cautious when sharing sensitive information and use strong, unique passwords for each account. Wherever you can use multi-factor authentication!

  3. Cyber Hygiene: Just as we prioritize personal hygiene to stay healthy, cyber hygiene is essential for a secure online experience. Keep your devices and software updated with the latest security patches. Be wary of suspicious emails, links, and attachments, as they could be phishing attempts. Trust your instincts and verify the authenticity of unexpected communications before acting.

  4. Respect and Empathy: The internet connects us in ways that were previously unimaginable. Let's harness this connectivity to foster a culture of respect and empathy online. Treat others with kindness and understanding, even in the face of differing opinions. Stand up to cyberbullying, harassment, and hate speech. Together, we can cultivate a digital environment where everyone feels safe and valued.

  5. Community Collaboration: Building a safer internet requires collaboration across all sectors of society. From government agencies and tech companies to educators and parents, everyone has a role to play. By working together, we can develop innovative solutions and initiatives to address emerging threats and promote digital well-being.

Safer Internet Day serves as a call to action for the entire GVSU community. Let's reflect on our digital habits, strengthen our online defenses, and commit to creating a safer, more inclusive internet for everyone.

Happy Safer Internet Day 2024!
