Information on Closed Captioning
Phone use is for participants that do not have speakers. If your live presentation requires that you participate using only your telephone, or if you are unable to log-in online and have previously mentioned this to your instructor, you should be provided with dial-in information (a phone number and PIN) relevant for your session.

If you will be doing two way communication, such as with the students or a guest who is invited to speak with you on Wimba, you will need to separate the speakers and the microphone. This is when having a headset becomes important because the computer's mic picks up sound from the speakers and you end up with an echo effect. There is a 3/4th second delay from when the student or guest speaks and when it is heard on the receiving computer. Your computer's microphone hears the sound and re-broadcasts it back to the listeners who hear it as a crazy echo.
The head phones eliminate the mic picking up the speakers with two way communications.
Using a computer with microphone and speakers is not an issue if you are privately recording an archive for others to listen to later or if you will not be allowing the students to speak.
