Student Outlook Express Setup Instructions

For users with blocked port 25 only:

If your cable modem service provider is blocking port 25 (your cable modem service provider will be able to supply you with that information - port 25 is where all SMTP email activity happens. If port 25 is blocked then you may receive an error message stating that you can not authenticate. Charter Communications, for example, has shut down port 25) - then you will have to use the following work around:

  1. Configure your Outlook express per their instructions using their imap and smtp servers.
  2. In the [Internet Accounts] menu box single click on the account you have created. Click on the [Properties] button on the right side of the menu.
  3. In the [General] tab (at the top of the menu) put your GVSU email address in the [Reply address:] box (i.e. normant@gvsu.edu). When someone replies to your email the reply will be shipped to your GVSU email account.

Can receive E-mail but not send E-mail

Some Internet Service Providers (ISP) will not allow you send mail from any SMTP server except their own SMTP server.  If you can recieve mail but not send email, you may need to contact your ISP to obtain the their SMTP setting.
