Work Authorization:

On Campus Employment: F-1 and J-1 students may work on campus, for the university, for 20 hours a week during the academic year and 40 hours a week during breaks. Employment may be found at www.gvsu.edu/studentemploy You will need to complete an I-9 We recommend that you begin looking for positions early. You should inquire at the Student Employment Office as well as any office or department that you are interested in working at for application instructions. 

Curricular Practical Training (CPT): work authorization for F-1 students while enrolled at GVSU. CPT must be required for your program or degree and an integral part of the program.

Optional Practical Training (OPT): work authorization for F-1 students after graduation. Students are eligible to apply for OPT the semester that they will graduate. The Padnos International Center hosts an OPT Fair biannually in September and January.

Academic Training (AT): work authorization for J-1 students after program completion. Some J-1 students may be eligible for AT after their program ends. Students should make an appointment in their last semester with Kate Stoetzner to discuss eligibility.
