Qualcomm develops and supplies code division multiple access(CDMA) based technology for wireless voice and data communication providers. In addition, the company licenses portions of its intellectual property to other manufacturers of wireless products. Basically, QCOM sells high capability chips for cell-phones and the blueprints to the chips for other manufacturers to make them.

Qualcomm currently yields 1.5% and falls into the large cap allocation of the IPO portfolio with a market cap of $77 billion. IPO currently holds 42 shares of QCOM (approx. $1,960 or 6% portfolio weight).

Looking backward, QCOM shares have outperformed the S&P 500 over one, two, and five year periods. IPO continues to hold Qualcomm for its positive historic growth rates, continued profitability through 2008 and into 2009, promising industry, competitive advantage through patent rights, and high margins (33.6% net margin for the past five years vs. 17.9% for the industry and 12.5% for the S&P 500)
