IB Major Requirements

All
SCB majors must complete BBA CORE requirements. As an International Business Major, you must also take courses from the International Business Component, the Cultural Component, complete a second SCB business major, complete a Foreign Language minor, and participate in a GVSU-approved study abroad program.


International Business Component:

Choose four courses from the following group:

  • ACC 330 - International Accounting
  • ECO 369 - International Economic Issues
  • FIN 429 - International Financial Management
  • MGT 433 - International Human Resource Management
  • MGT 466 - International Management and Multinational Corporations
  • MKT 359 - Multinational Marketing

And one course from the following group: 

  • ECO 349 - Emerging Markets Issues
  • ECO 365 - Comparative Economic Systems
  • PLS 315 - International Political Economy
Cultural Component: 

Students must take six hours of course credit that may be completed by taking EITHER:

OPTION A
Take two courses from the following:
  • BUS 301 - International Business and Culture
  • EAS 201 - East Asia in the Contemporary World
  • GPY 220 - Cultural Geography
  • GPY 235 - World Regional Geography
  • GPY 350 - Geography of Russia and Its Neighbors
  • GPY 352 - Geography of Latin America
  • GPY 355 - Geography of Southwest Asia (The Middle East)
  • LAS 210 - Exploring Latin America
  • PLS 211 - International Relations
  • PLS 221 - Government and Politics of Western Europe
  • PLS 283 - Chinese Politics and US-China Relations
  • PLS 327 - Politics of Developing Countries
  • RST 225 - Introduction to Russian Culture

 

Other courses in a variety of disciplines may be used to fulfill this group as approved by the advisor.

OPTION B
At least six hours of international internship credit.  This option is highly recommended.

Second SCB Business Major
Students are required to complete a second SCB major in a functional discipline (Accounting, Economics, Finance, Management, or Marketing)

Foreign Language Minor
A foreign language minor or demonstrated proficiency in a foreign language is required.  Students who feel they can demonstrate proficiency will be assessed by the Modern Language faculty, based on American Council for Teaching of Foreign Language (ACTFL) guidelines and a personal interview.

Study Abroad Experience
Students are required to participate in a GVSU-approved study abroad experience.  At least 6 credits required for the major must be obtained abroad.

International Business Minor Requirements
The undergraduate minor program in international business is for both business and non-business students with the exception of of those majoring in international business and general business. The minor consists of 18 credit hours (six courses).

Required Courses:
ECO 210 Introductory Macroeconomics
MGT 303 Introduction to International Business

Choose three courses from the following:

  • ACC 330 International Accounting
  • ECO 349 Emerging Market Issues
  • ECO 365 Comparative Economic Systems
  • ECO 369 International Economic Issues
  • FIN 429 International Financial Management
  • MGT 466 International Management and Multinational Corporations
  • MKT 359 Multinational Marketing

Additional Course
IB minors must also choose one course from the International Business Major Cultural Component requirement, or a three-credit international internship. Students majoring in any business discipline or economics must select an additional cultures or international business couse.

Choose one from the following:

Or participate in a three-credit international internship

Students much achieve a cumulative 2.5 GPA in these courses to receive the international business minor designation. Student must complete all prerequisite courses before enrolling in the international business minor courses. Courses may be taken credit/no credit.
