Description

Dialogue about our traditions while crafting hand-made goods to donate to local, national, and international organizations. Bring a brown-bag snack or supper as well as any knitting supplies that you have to use yourself and/or to share with others. Coffee, tea, and water will be provided.

If you can, please donate knitting supplies, yarn, and patterns so others can knit even if you cannot. Monetary donations also accepted to help buy materials and pay for shipping.

Who will we be knitting for?

  • Refugees (Local):  
    • West Michigan Refugee Educational and Cultural Center -http://westmirefugee.org/  Serving primarily Kent and Ottawa County, they work with any family that has school aged children.  Current incoming refugee populations include Burmese, Somali, Bhutanese, Congolese, Sudanese, and Burundian.
    • Items needed include :  They can use anything along the line of winter items for school aged children:  Hats, scarves, mittens, etc.  Their supply is almost depleted and they will need many more additional items by fall.
  • Cancer Patients (Local / State):
    • Gilda's Club (http://www.gildasclubgr.org/) and Knit Michigan(http://knitmichigan.org/). Both organizations are dedicated to supporting cancer patients and their families.
    • Items needed include :  Welcome donations of chemo caps, lap blankets, and knitted knockers (breast prosthesis).  Patterns are available on the Knit Michigan website.
  • Hospitals / Red Cross (National):
    • Warm Up America (http://www.warmupamerica.org/ )  This organizations works with Red Cross and hospitals providing knitted items to homeless shelters, battered women’s shelters, veterans homes, senior centers, hospices and religious organizations
    • Items needed include :  Focus is on adult and baby afghans.  They will also accept caps, mittens, scarves, and gloves.
  • Poverty Worldwide: (National / International):
    • Knit with Love ( http://www.knitwithlove.org/donate.html ) and World Vision: Knit for Kids (http://knitforkids.org/about-us/story/) Both organizations provide items to high poverty regions in the USA and worldwide.
    • Items needed include :  Beanies, caps, blankets, scarves, prayer shawls, sweaters for Knit with Love; infant blanket, child cap, child sweater for World Vision: Knit for Kids.  Both organizations have patterns on their website that they request be used to insure uniformity in items distributed to their target populations.
