The annual observance of the UN International Day of Peace, September 21, will once again be greeted by a Proclamation from the Mayor’s Office to “commemorate and strengthen the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples.”  The Institute for Global Education has planned several important community events to celebrate and observe peace here in Grand Rapids in connection with this international day of observances around the world:

1.  A peace presence at Eastown’s Annual Street Fair, on Saturday, September 10, 9:00--5:00 p.m. where children of all ages can learn about the seven principles of peace through win-win activities.

2.  Sunday September 25, 2016, a Gathering in St. Francis Garden on the front lawn of Dominican Sisters~Grand Rapids motherhouse at Marywood (East Fulton and Lakeside Dr.) at 1:00 p.m.-1:45 p.m. sponsored by the Instruments of Hope. Followed by an Interfaith Peace Service from 2:00-3:00 p.m. at The Dominican Chapel at Marywood (East Fulton and Lakeside) and a reception.

3.  A Week of Peace Education by proclamation from the Grand Rapids Public Schools (September 19-23, 2016), now in its 32st consecutive year, will take place in the public schools with a program guide from the UN IDP website containing age-appropriate activities for observing peace and celebrating people of different cultures during this week.

The UN Peace Day 2016 theme: “The Sustainable Development Goals: Building Blocks for Peace.”  The seventeen Sustainable Development Goals were unanimously adapted by the 193 Member States of the United Nations in September 2015.  The 2030 agenda calls on countries to begin efforts to achieve these goals over the next 15 years.  It aims to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all.  The goals are a building block in the global architecture of peace.
