Conversations on Migration

The College of Interdisciplinary Studies has selected migration as the topic of the 2008-2009 Campus Conversation Series.  The College invites the GVSU commuinty to consider the questions of migration through lectures, literature, service, performance, and dialogue.  "It is our hope that these conversations will demonstrate the importance of intersectionality between the disciplines by exploring these questions, wading into difficult dialogues, and moving through our discussions into scholarship and action," said Susan Mendoza-Jones, Director of the Integrative Learning program.

The events will explore the world's changing political, economic, environmental, and social systems, and how they create conditions that necessitate the migration of populations from one community or ecosystem to another.  The consideration of migration is not limited to one particular topic, but examines the boundaries between such issues as humanitarian crises, degrading ecosystems, global conflict, economic opportunity, and globalization.

As planning begins for the 2008-2009 Academic Year, the College of Interdisciplinary Studies would like to invite the GVSU community to consider the questions of migration in their courses, programs, speakers, performances, exhibits, and literature.  "The goal of the interdisciplinary and community dialogue cannot be realized without engaging all of the disciplines and communities of the University," said Mendoza-Jones.
