The following is a real good example of an opportunity for students who are contemplating a Gap Year: Here is a link  to the AdviseMI job posting through the Michigan College Access Network. They are now hiring for their 2017-2018 cohort to serve as college advisers in high schools across the state that are in need of creating a college-going culture. This position would be a great fit for someone in Brooks College, and this is also affiliated with Americorps, one of the presenters who will be at our program ($24,000 stipend, healthcare, childcare and $5,000 education award). Want to know more?  Here is a great description of the opportunities available:

AmeriCorps NCCC members travel the country strengthening communities and developing leadership skills on diverse teams. Members serve full-time for 10 months to address community needs and respond to disasters.

AmeriCorps VISTA members serve at a nonprofit organization or public agency to fight illiteracy, improve health services, foster economic development, and otherwise assist low-income communities. Many VISTA members serve right here in Grand Rapids as well as across the state and country.

Teach for America teachers work in low-income school districts across the USA, including districts in Michigan! TFA teachers receive the same salary, vacation, and comprehensive health care benefits as other beginning teachers in their district.

AmeriCorps City Year members provide individualized support to at-risk students, working to bridge the gap in high-poverty communities between the support the students in the communities actually need and what their schools are designed to provide.

Peace Corps members immerse themselves in a community abroad, working side by side with local leaders in more than 60 countries to tackle issues like food security, sustainability, access to education, and strengthening local health care systems.
