500 first-year students attend Social Justice Celebration

More than 500 first-year students attended the Inclusion and Equity Social Justice Celebration on Friday, August 26.

The event followed the final Transitions keynote, "Building a More Inclusive Campus Community," where students were invited to share aspects of their identity and experiences to begin dialogue across difference.

After the presentation, the speaker, Rev. Dr. Jaime Washington, led students to the Russel H. Kirkhof Center to visit social justice centers and learn more about the Office of Multicultural Affairs, Center for Women and Gender Equity, LGBT Resource Center, Campus Interfaith Resources, and Disability Support Resources.

The keynote and celebration were new components of the orientation program.

Jesse Bernal, vice president for Inclusion and Equity, described the additions as a coordinated effort to create a more welcoming and inclusive campus climate.
