Grand Valley Logos and Images in Social Media Standards

With the continuing growth of social media as a means of communication, it is critical for Grand Valley departments, programs, organizations, events, etc., to align with the established Grand Valley brand in their online presence.

The following social media image usage standards have been established in order to present the university in an appropriate and consistent manner across all social media platforms and to avoid the misuse of university logos and trademarks.

Please also review the general guidelines for using social media at Grand Valley.

Downloads and Requests

After you have reviewed the following standards, proceed to the logo download page for official Grand Valley logos or contact Institutional Marketing for official Grand Valley theme images for Facebook and Twitter as shown on this page.

Social Media Administrators

Official Grand Valley Social Media Administrators

Official social media administrators represent a Grand Valley State University school, college, center, institute, division, office, department, program, or another administrative unit. Personal social media venues are not considered official Grand Valley channels.

Official Grand Valley social media administrators may use:

The athletic GV logo and Louie the Laker logos are only available for use with permission of the Athletics Department. For internal use of athletics logos, including Louie the Laker, contact Doug Witte at wittedo@gvsu.edu.

Registered Student Organization (RSO) Social Media Administrators

Grand Valley registered student organization social media administrators may use:

  • The Grand Valley State University or GVSU name in the name of a social media account or page.
  • Campus photography and images.
  • Approved theme images.

The use of any Grand Valley logo or logomark in social media is not permitted for RSOs.

Individual Students and Alumni Social Media Administrators

Grand Valley students and alumni who wish to be represented on their social media channels by a Grand Valley image are recommended to use:

  • Campus photography and images.

The use of the Grand Valley State University name or any of its logos or logomarks in social media is not permitted for students and alumni.

Creating Avatars and Profile Images

Using the Grand Valley State University Logomark in Social Media

Grand Valley’s primary logo or signature consists of the “Circle G” (logomark) and the words “Grand Valley State University” (logotype).

Due to size restrictions, official Grand Valley social media users may use the “Circle G” logomark for avatars and profile images without the logotype appearing elsewhere on the page. The logomark may not be altered or used as part of another logo or design.

Using the department's name or abbreviation in conjunction with the logomark is the preferred style.

Official Colors

The logomark MUST be one of the following:

Hexadecimal          RGB

All blue           #0065A4                0/101/164

All black          #0000000              0/0/0

All white          #ffffff (six f's)          255/255/255

GVSU Colors

Light blue or grey may be used as an accent color.

Use: Tahoma

For legibility, use no more than 12 characters (including spaces) for the department name or abbreviation. The "College of Ed" sample above was created in a graphic design program with kerning and spacing adjusted accordingly.

Dimensions

  • Twitter avatars are 70 pixels x 70 pixels
  • Facebook profile images should be 200 pixels x 200 pixels (though there is not technically a height restriction). You may also choose “scale to fit” in the Facebook dialog box. If an image is taller than 200 pixels, it will crop off the top portion as the thumbnail graphic.

Please note that avatars and profile images created outside the above dimensions may produce an undesirable thumbnail image.

For assistance in creating an official Grand Valley avatar or profile image using the Grand Valley logomark, please contact Institutional Marketing.

  • Use an image cropped to 1600 pixels x 1200 pixels. Maximum file size is 800k.
