AH&LA is a new club to GVSU this year! The purpose of the American Hotel & Lodging Association GVSU Chapter is to allow anyone in HTM to gain a greater understanding of the lodging side to HTM as well as an great opportunity to meet established people in the industry, make connections, and better your networking skills for the future!
The Hospitality and Tourism Management Club at GVSU is a fun way to become involved in the hospitality industry! We encourage those interested in hospitality to come learn from guest speakers who are industry professionals, as well as to explore the local hospitality culture we have here in Grand Rapids.
A new club to GVSU this year. The club will give students an insight into the corporate meeting planner industry. This international association will provide networking opportunities with meeting planners and suppliers. We will offer hands on activities such as portfolio development, room design and layouts, and we will also learn about the trends within the event industry.
The NSMH is a non-profit student run organization. NSMH prides itself on preparing minority students to be leaders in the hospitality industry. NSMH provides its members with a competitive advantage through programs and conferences, networking opportunities, scholarships, and career development services. The idea is not specifically about being a minority, but understanding how accepting and appreciating all differences that anyone can face, can make us better in this industry. NSMH is comprised of over 80 chapters at colleges and universities throughout the United States. The NSMH mission is to educate in order to aid in the recruitment, retention, support, and advancement of minority students in the hospitality industry. Build and maintain relationships between hospitality professionals and minority students in ways that encourage lifelong commitment to the organization.
The Professional Convention Management Association at GVSU is going on its third year in action. We are excited to be building the club in efforts to help future event and meeting professionals understand the current trends and learn from what is happening now in the industry. Every year the Grand Valley chapter of PCMA has the chance to attend the national conference. In years past, places have included Las Vegas and San Diego. This upcoming January, we will be attending the conference in Orlando! Fundraising opportunities occur regularly to aid in assistance for attending. This awesome conference gives students the chance to network with current business professionals while learning innovative techniques and exploring possible business opportunities.
All general HTM Clubs meetings are held every other Tuesday beginning January 24, 2013. The general meetings will be held in 138E DeVos and begin at 7 p.m. Specific club meetings will follow the general HTM Clubs meeting. This way students with different emphases can learn directly about their area of soon-to-be expertise.
On weeks that we do not meet for our scheduled meetings, we will have some type of outing or get together. This way, those who are not always able to attend meetings can still be involved while getting to know fellow students and network amongst each other while sharing a common interest. Some examples are restaurant nights, bowling, or a cake decorating contest!
