Position Summary

The Butler Pantry Retail Marketing & Merchandising Internship is an/opportunity to help drive the growth of/a unique small business!//We are/looking for students with creative ideas and initiative to help reimagine our long-standing retail store. You will be hands-on interacting with customers and executing on daily operations while also developing and executing marketing and merchandising strategies to drive brand awareness, traffic, loyalty, sales and increase average purchase receipts.

The Internship: Held over a 10 to 12-week period during the summer of 2024, this paid internship will prepare students for a career in Retail & Hospitality Marketing. Contribute to meaningful work, develop your skills, support small business and have fun!

A staple of downtown Saugatuck, Michigan

The Butler Pantry opened its doors in 1977 serving residents and visitors alike. Nestled in a historic storefront in the heart of Saugatuck, The Butler Pantry offers customers gourmet foods and quality kitchenware. The store carries specialty food items, fine wines, cookware and other accessories. In July 2023, the store changed hands to new owners and The Butler Pantry refreshed its visual identity to feel more modern, approachable, and refined.

 

Our Mission

Revitalize The Butler Pantry, a 2,500 sq-ft. historic brick & mortar kitchenware and gourmet foods store in beautiful Saugatuck, Michigan, making it a year-round viable business with focus on community and ecology.

 

Immediate goals for the store include:

  • Ensure inventory ordering is efficient; leverage analytics to understand how products from highest priced to lowest are moving.
  • Launch and maintain new website with eCommerce platform.
  • Build strong marketing presence for the store and boost sales over the off-season.
  • Boost summer sales of coffee counter and grab-and-go products via expansion of menu items and creation of outdoor dining space.
  • Update product offerings, packaging and processes to reflect a more eco-conscious philosophy.
  • Establish an events curriculum building out free, paid and private events – including wine tastings, charcuterie board team competitions, chef demonstrations, local farmer presentations, cookbook signings and more.

Marketing & Merchandising Internship Inclusions

Customer Service: Receive and fulfill online orders. Help service customers during operational hours.

Inventory Management: Grow relationships with suppliers & distributors. Ensure new inventory orders are correctly fulfilled and received. Stock and display product on the store floor and monitor inventory flow. Analyze consumer trends to help with suggestions for new products.

Store Events & Activations: Aid with the planning, production and marketing of our in-store events calendar including weekly wine tastings. Use creativity to help create engaging events and promotions that drive foot traffic while growing sales and loyalty.

Coffee Bar Sales: Champion the store’s coffee bar, helping to perfect processes and merchandising to support sales and service of iced coffee drinks, baked goods and other grab-and-go items.

Features and Promos: Develop and execute approved promotions for in-store (e.g. window displays, sidewalk sandwich board messaging, in-store signage, etc.,) and online channels (e.g. store website, social media channels, etc.,). Support ideation and implementation of thematic monthly features.

Marketing / Public Relations / Social Media: Deploy marketing messages across online and offline channels including social media (Facebook & Instagram), local CVB partnership, local listings, area publications, partner websites and more. Help with monitoring and responding to reviews across social media and online reviews sites. Develop content for publishing to social media channels.

eCommerce: Support management of store’s digital sales engine on forthcoming new website.

Data and Digital Acumen: Leverage data analysis tools to perform basic statistical analysis, derive insights, and create basic reports around inventory management, marketing and eCommerce KPIs. Use visualization tools to represent data and construct coherent stories to influence decisions.

Business Acumen: Shadow store leaders and learn valuable insight into operating a destination retail store. Provide insight on opportunities to drive business.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Must be enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree program currently 
  • Expected graduation date between December 2024-August 2026
  • Demonstrated ability with Microsoft Office applications
  • Team-oriented thinking
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Positive outlook
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in all situations with solid interpersonal skills
  • Ability to take initiative, learn quickly and strive for results

Desired Qualifications:

  • Creative eye for merchandising and displays
  • Social Media content creation experience
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong writing skills

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to operate computers and other technical systems to perform job functions
  • Must be able to lift up to 25lbs. regularly
  • Must be able to stand or walk 100% of the time
