Food and Beverage Management

Good jobs, great people, extraordinary
opportunity. The restaurant industry is
projected to employ 12.8 million people
in 2011, or nearly 10 percent of the U.S.
workforce in 960,000 locations. The
forecast for 2011 is $604 billion in sales
with the restaurant industry sharing
49 percent of the food dollar (NRA, 2011).

The food and beverage industry represents four percent of the U.S. gross domestic product and employs nearly ten percent of the U.S. workforce. Consumers remain hungry for the variety, convenience and socialization restaurants provide (NRA, 2008).
As industry sales continue to increase, and its overall economic impact is expected to exceed $1.7 trillion, the workforce is also growing. The restaurant industry is expected to add 1.3 million jobs over the next decade, with employment reaching 14.1 million by 2021. Every additional million dollars in restaurant sales generate an additional 34 jobs for the economy (NRA , 2011).
Workforce Trends
Restaurant occupations that will grow considerably in the next decade include management positions, chefs and head cooks, waitstaff, and combined food preparation and service positions. Ranked as the number one challenge for restaurant operators, recruiting and retaining employees is an industry priority now and into the future (NRA, 2008).
