We are pleased to introduce Rebecca Brittain, Research Protections Assistant for GVSU.  Rebecca joined our office at the beginning of winter term and will be pursuing a master's degree in Biology this fall.


Rebecca administers the human and animal research submission process and works closely to support the functions of both research review committees (HRRC and IACUC).  She is available for one-on-one consultations and will soon be available to deliver training presentations to the GVSU research community.

GVSU has responded to the Advanced Notice of Proposed Rule Making. A copy of our 8 page response is located on the ANPRM Forum page on the Blackboard site we set up to facilitate GV community discussion. Additional updates and related announcements also will be posted on this Blackboard site as they are available from OHRP.










 


 As of Nov. 2nd more than 1100 responses had been filed from individuals and institutions. All responses submitted are available for review at the following link:

    HHS Announces Proposal to Improve Rules Protecting Human Research Subjects


    Changes under consideration would ensure the highest standards of protections for human subjects involved in research, while enhancing effectiveness of oversight


    The comment period for the proposed changes to the HHS regulations has been extended to October 26, 2011. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)  announced on July 22, 2011 that the federal government is contemplating various ways of enhancing the regulations overseeing human subjects research.  See OHRP Portal at:  http://www.hhs.gov/ohrp/. 



    The discussion board and documents are now up and running! Login to mybb.gvsu.edu and work with others in the community to improve the proposed new rules. Researchers will have to log into the blackboard site with their faculty/student login and then click the course labeled "Research Protections Program" where you will be able to collaborate comments and concerns with other professionals in the research community. If you are having trouble finding the course or logging in, feel free to contact the HRRC or RPP via email or phone.

    Paul J. Reitemeier, Ph.D., Chair of the Human Research Review Committee and Director of the Human Research Protections Program, received the Honorary Counselor award on May 3, given annually by the GVSU Counseling and Career Development Center. 


    The nominator praised Dr. Reitemeier for being "most helpful in counseling our staff and assisting them to conduct high quality research that helps to improve our services to Grand Valley."


    Susan Mendoza, director of Undergraduate Research and Scholarship (and Office of Integrative Learning), received the Achievement Award April 26 during the annual Administrative/Professional luncheon.



    The award is the highest honor presented to an A/P staff member to recognize that person’s outstanding contributions to Grand Valley. Mendoza is involved in a host of annual initiatives including Student Scholars Day, Community Reading Project and Student Summer Scholars. One nominator said Mendoza has increased the quality and scope of each program she has been involved with.
