Job Summary

Primary responsibility for cataloging and processing complex and unique library resources including extensive serial collections, legal materials, educational manipulatives, kits, software and realia, serials from the State of Michigan, and special items for the regional historical collection.

Essential Functions

  • Catalogs monographs, serials, standing orders and electronic media, such as compact disks, DVDs and electronic books by searching, selecting, importing and editing appropriate catalog records from an international bibliographic database of library ownership information.
  • Responsible for establishing access to library resources by assuring accuracy and completeness of complex records in the library’s online catalog, including; selecting and importing records, updating holdings records for multiple library locations, assigning call numbers and enhancing existing bibliographic records to increase user access, which may include adding links to online resources.
  • Responsible for using multiple, complex software suites as well as following internationally established protocols and standards to assure accuracy of all cataloging functions.
  • Creates original catalog records for all library locations and uploading newly created records to an international bibliographic database.
  • Assist library staff in all locations with questions regarding cataloging issues.
  • Responds quickly to cataloging issues reported by faculty and staff by ascertaining relevant information and taking appropriate action.
  • Assist in the supervision of student employees and the coordination of their work.
  • Updates holding in an international bibliographic database to facilitate sharing resources with other libraries.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Non-Essential Functions

  • Assist and advise library staff in collection management and relocation projects
  • Responsible for learning other functions of the KARMS team, and backing up teammates in case of absence
  • May assist User Experience team by staffing the service point a few hours per week
  • Assist with energy issues by monitoring and reducing the use of lights, power and water as appropriate
  • Inform and explain to students and staff the energy compliance measures including light dimming and under floor air distribution systems

Required Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Minimum of three years of relevant work experience.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain positive interpersonal relationships.
  • Ability to operate office equipment.
  • Ability to provide quality customer service.
  • Ability to maintain satisfactory work performance and attendance records.
  • Possess strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Typing and spelling competency.
  • Experience with various computer software applications.
  • Data entry experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Some college course work.
  • Familiarity and experience with an integrated library system (Innovative preferred).
  • Supervisory experience.

Supervision Received

Receives general instruction from a designated supervisor but is generally expected to work independently.

Supervision Exercised

Hire, train, supervise, schedule and coordinate the work of student employees and may act as lead worker to other COT staff members within the department/unit/division.
