Job Summary

Assists in laboratory activities related to teaching and research, and is responsible for the operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment and supplies.

Essential Functions

  • Set up and operate laboratory equipment, including video, computer, and electro-physiological monitoring equipment.
  • Assist in the logistics and coordination of experiments and observations being carried out in the laboratories.
  • Maintain departmental lab records as required.
  • Manage the subject pool for ongoing experiments.
  • Responsible for orderliness and cleanliness of lab areas.
  • Assist in care and treatment of laboratory animals.
  • Maintain inventory of laboratory equipment and supplies.
  • Initiate requisitions for the replacement of times and repair of equipment as necessary.
  • Demonstrate and/or explain to student employee(s)/student assistant(s) proper laboratory procedures.
  • Oversee research assistants and students who are using the lab.
  • Develop and implement procedures for the efficient operation of a laboratory.
  • Install, test and maintain laboratory software.
  • Supervise student employees.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • High school graduate.
  • Two years of college course work in psychology and biological sciences.
  • Demonstrated experience to successfully work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated experience to successfully maintain positive interpersonal relationships.
  • Demonstrated experience to successfully operate office equipment.
  • Demonstrated experience to successfully provide quality customer service.
  • Demonstrated experience to successfully maintain satisfactory work performance and attendance record.
  • Possess strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience to successfully work independently, organize own work and coordinate work activities of others.
  • Demonstrated experience to successfully operate computer, video, and/or electro-physiological monitoring equipment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge on safety regulations and procedures associated with electrical equipment.
  • Demonstrated experience to successfully show knowledge of basic electronics and mechanical aptitude.
  • Demonstrated experience to successfully install and test computer software.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Higher education experience.
  • Supervisory experience.

Supervision Received

Receives minimal supervision from a designated supervisor. Much of the work is self-initiated. Person is expected to function with considerable independence and apply appropriate policies and procedures within the assigned area of responsibility.

Supervision Exercised

Hire, train, schedule and coordinate the work of student employees and may act as lead worker to PSS staff members within the department/unit/division.
