Assistant Director, GVSU Women's Center

Brittany Dernberger is the Assistant Director of the GVSU Women’s Center. She completed her undergraduate degree at GVSU with a double major in Sociology and Women and Gender Studies and is finishing her Masters of Public Administration in Nonprofit Leadership. Brittany coordinates the Women’s Center’s service learning initiatives, including the Women’s Issues Volunteer Corps (WIVC) and partnering with Women and Gender Studies on the South Africa Study Abroad trip. Brittany also directs the Women’s Leadership House, Student Food Pantry, and oversees outreach and communication at the Women’s Center. Brittany serves on the University’s Nontraditional Student Committee, Veteran’s Network and Wellness Task Force. Additionally, Brittany is active in the community, including serving on the Board of Directors of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of West Michigan.

Julia Mason

Associate Professor, Women & Gender Studies

Dr. Julia Mason is an assistant professor of Women and Gender Studies. She earned her doctorate in American Culture Studies, with graduate certificates in Women’s Studies and Ethnic Studies, from Bowling Green State University and a Master of Arts in American Indian Studies from The University of Arizona. Professor Mason is currently conducting research on representation of motherhood in popular television. Since arriving at GVSU in 2003, Dr. Mason has worked closely with the Women’s Center on a number of partnerships and projects, including the Women’s Community Collaborative, the Silent Witness Initiative, and “In Our Own Words.” She is committed to supporting the development of student leaders.

Ayana Weekley
Women's Leadership House Faculty Fellow
Assistant Professor, Women & Gender Studies

Dr. Ayana Weekly is an Assistant Professor in the Women's and Gender Studies program. She graduated from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities with a doctorate in Feminist Studies in 2010. Dr. Weekley's areas of scholarly interest include: HIV/AIDS, black feminist theory, black queer studies, and the intersections of race, gender and sexualities. She previously served on the board of the Grand Rapids Red Project whose mission is improving health, preventing HIV, and reducing risk in the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Julia Raap
2013-2014 Women's Leadership House Peer Mentor

Julia Raap is a senior majoring in Women and Gender Studies with a minor in Psychology. She is from Wayland, Michigan and lived in the Women’s Leadership House last year. She been a GVSU Women’s Center Ambassador for three years and is also a member of the Women and Gender Studies honorary society, Triota.  Julia is currently interning at Girls Inc. of the YWCA of West Central Michigan, a nonprofit that inspires all girls to be strong, smart, and bold through educational programming and experiences. Her hobbies include reading, watching television, and blogging about feminism and popular culture.
