Living/Learning Communities

Housing and Residence Life offers living-learning communities in a number of our on-campus apartments. Students living in these buildings have chosen to expand their education through shared learning experiences, and each community is built upon a specific theme, major, or area of interest. Professional and graduate staff work closely with a faculty coordinator in these communities to provide a rich living-learning experience that extends outside of the classroom (programs, events, field trips, research, etc.).

Art Housing

Are you an art major? Consider the Calder Residence which provides housing for art majors.  This building has efficiency apartments for 48 residents, and is located directly next to the Calder Art Academic Complex.

Honors College

Are you an Honors College student? Consider the Niemeyer Living Center, Hills Living Center, and Pickard Living Center where all the residents are in the Honors College. This supportive community provides on-site access to faculty and staff, as well as the opportunity to take classes right in the Niemeyer Living Center.

International House

The International Housing is a living/learning program for undergraduate students majoring or minoring in International Relations, Political Science, International Business, or Modern Languages and international students studying at Grand Valley. The purpose of the International house is to provide a supportive residential environment for students who have a strong interest in international affairs. Out-of-class programming will focus on common interests with an emphasis on international relations. Additional support for the students will include in-residence faculty advising, career planning, study skills support, and social activities based on an international theme. (Students in the Honors Program may also apply.)

Movement Science House

All Movement Science Majors will be invited and encouraged to participate in the Movement Science House. The co-curricular (common courses) cohort will be aimed towards Freshman and Transfer students.

The mission of the Movement Science House is to provide opportunities for students to become and remain engaged in the Movement Sciences while enhancing their academic, social and professional development. This will occur through the development of diverse and open perspectives, critical thinking and personal investment in their field.

Women in Science, Engineering, and Math - WISE

Are you pursuing a degree in Science, Engineering, or Math? Consider residing in the Women in Science, Engineering, and Math learning/living community. Formerly housed in suite style, this program made an exciting move in Fall 2010 to our newest campus apartments, South Apartments C. South C houses female students majoring in Science, Engineering, and/or Math. You'll benefit from a supportive, interactive environment for students pursuing career success in Science, Engineering, and Math disciplines.

Women's Leadership House

The Women’s Leadership House (WLH) at Grand Valley State University provides a small community experience within the larger university. WLH seeks to cultivate a community of women who are investing in the exploration of their authentic self in order to actively work towards gender justice. Students who live in GVSU’s Women’s Leadership House will be civically engaged and become advocates for change on campus and in the broader community.  Resident involvement is integral in developing and sustaining a dynamic academic community.  Resident input and leadership will shape the program and events that touch a wide variety of topics central to women's leadership development.  The creativity of residents allows for a nurturing and inclusive community of women leaders. The Women's Leadership House is for female students interested in Women and Gender Studies, Women's Leadership, Social Justice, and connecting with students with similar interests.
