Tips for Transition

The transition to college can be overwhelming for your any student. As a parent, guardian, or family member of a new college student, you play an important part in your student’s successful transition and subsequent academic and social success at GVSU.

Here are a few tips to help you help them through the process.

  • Encourage students to ask questions and solve problems
  • Ask students what they think they should do
  • Send positive messages about your pride in their efforts
  • Encourage taking risks that create positive results
  • Share that healthy behavior is a result of practice
  • Role model an adult relationship with your student
  • Encourage developing new friendships at GVSU
  • Always suggest consulting with a staff person for advice
  • Ask follow-up questions when concerned about behavior
  • Help your student understand that the Family Educational Rights to Privacy Act (FERPA) does not allow you access to their educational files or to handle situations for them
  • Suggest talking with roommates about problems (in person) as it relates to sharing space
  • Love them regardless of the results
  • Encourage your student to get involved in campus events — Laker Late Night, Student Organizations, intramurals, sporting and cultural events, etc..
  • Encourage them to find a great place they feel comfortable studying (which may be outside of their living center room)
  • Encourage them to work toward balance concerning diet, sleep, exercise, and relaxation
