Dr J Banner Frederik Meijer Honors College

Michael Angerbrandt

Class Year:

Brown City, Michigan, United States

Why did you choose to attend Grand Valley?
My family and I were on vacation the summer going into my junior year of high school and we went to Muskegon and walked around campus. I just loved it. It was a beautiful campus. I had stayed in dorms at other campuses before that I didn't like as well. Grand Valley is more modern. I then toured and did more research about the university - everything about it I just loved.

What do you like best about Grand Valley?
I like the fact that there is always something going on. The student organizations do their best to get diversity onto campus as much as possible. For example, the other night was Israeli food night. There is always something going on to give you the option to meet new people, network, and do other fun stuff.

How have you benefited from Grand Valley's liberal education foundation?
It broadens my scope. It leads me to think about things in different ways. Instead of just thinking straight business and finance, I can consider the more philosophical view and the way others may think. Half of my roommates are biomedical science students, so I'm also exposed to that field. It helps me not be narrow minded.

How will Grand Valley help you meet your future goals?
The liberal education is a part of it. It keeps me from being too narrowly focused. So, come job interview time, I won't be looking at things one way. I will have different ways to answer questions. And, I feel like the classes themselves teach you everything you need to know and then some. You learn quite a lot about the subject matter.

How has the Honors College enhanced your overall education?
It's given me the necessary tools with my classmates being right around the corner. If I have a question, I can just walk down the hall to ask classmates for help. Also, the classes help you think more critically, are more discussion based, and in general involve you more.

How have you benefitted from living in Honors College housing?
There are three floors, with two sides, and each area always has events going on. The RAs are always getting events together. A couple weeks ago we had a skiing and snowboarding trip.

Why would you recommend the Honors College to others?
It challenges you to think in different ways and it offers you more opportunities. Themes and general education requirements are together in classes. This allows you to get a step ahead in your major and take more advanced classes if you choose to.
