Basic Skills

Some Meijer Honors students come to Grand Valley with advanced placement credit fulfilling the writing (WRT 150) or mathematics (MTH 110) basic skills requirements.

Writing Requirements:
WRT 150 Strategies in Writing: Fulfilled when a student has AP English credits (with a score of 4 or 5), obtains a B or better grade for an Honors Arts and Humanities sequence, or has passed the CLEP test.

Supplemental Writing Skills (SWS): Fulfilled when a student has completed an Honors Arts and Humanities sequence.

WRT 305: Fulfilled when a student completes all Honors course requirements except HNR 499, and is in good standing with the Frederik Meijer Honors College (a 3.2 GPA or higher).

Mathematical Sciences:
Unless you have placed into higher level math classes or have received AP credit, you must complete MTH 110. This course is a pre-requisite for other math courses and should be taken early in a student's academic career. You can fulfill the additional requirement with any one of the following courses:

  • CS 160 - Programming with Visual Basic
  • MTH 122 - College Algebra
  • MTH 123 - Trigonometry
  • MTH 125 - Survey of Calculus
