Professor Kurt Ellenberger Interviewed for Book "The New Face of Jazz"

Kurt Ellenberger, Associate Director of Grants for FTLC, is to be included in a major publishing house’s survey of only about 200 jazz musicians from all over the world, including people like Wynton Marsalis, McCoy Tyner, Lee Ritenour, Arturo Sandival, and George Benson.  He will be doing a “book signing” session at the Detroit Jazz Festival next summer, as well as other events around the country. He is also teaching a Junior Seminar in the Fall of 2010 titled "Music, Culture, and Aesthetics." You can find the book on Amazon here.

Junior Seminar Visits the History of Hemingway

 In the Spring of 2009, Sue Swartzlander and her Junior Seminar class, Hemingway in Michigan explored the early life of writer Ernest Hemingway when he lived in Michigan. The students created projects for those who might want to know more about Hemingway's Michigan background, relevant to their interests. Those projects are posted on the Hemingway in Michigan website.

 


 

Group of Meijer Honors College Students Travel to Ghana

Student Services Coordinator Janaan Decker as well as students Annie Hakim, Andrew Gordon, Casey Key, Amanda Clark, Ben Garlets, and Zoe Smith left July 6th for Ghana for service learning opportunities. To read more and follow the student's experiences, check out the Ghana 2009 website.

 Four Meijer Honors College Students Admitted into Michigan State University Medical School


Six students from Grand Valley State University were admitted into Michigan State University's College of Human Medicine.  Out of the six selected, four are members of the Meijer Honors College.  The Honors students admitted are Casey Key, Alex Gilde, Beth Fetzer, and Caleb Ortega.

Antigone

In April, students performed Professor Diane Rayor's new translation of Antigone, a translation that will soon be published by the Cambridge University Press.  The performance was the first ever in the Glenn A. Niemeyer Amphitheater

In April, several students presented at Student Scholarship Day, an annual event celebrating the scholarship and created work of Grand Valley students.

In April, seven students presented their work at the 3rd annual Grand Rapids Area Intercollegiate Honors Conference, held at Aquinas College.

 David Jagusch presents "Anarchy in the Classroom: A Multigenre About One Punk's Transition into the Educational Arena"


 
Engineering Students Receive Top Honors

A group of students in Grand Valley's Product Innovation and Manufacturing class won first place in a robotics competition in Connecticut.  The students participated in the Trinity College International RoboWaiter competition in Hartland, a competition aimed at demonstrating the use of robots in assistive technology. 

The students who participated in the event were Tyler Dickinson, Troy Roersma, Kyler Kamyszek, Lauren Leemhuis, Jacob Braun, Matthew Steffes, Kurt O'Hearn, Brad Diekema, Josh Stevenson, and Sam Kreuze, assisted by professors Andrew Sterian and Chris Pung.


Mid-East Honors Association

In March, Dr. J and Janaan accompanied students Eric Nodge, Sara Veselenak, Patrick Roach, Cara VanDusen, and Fatima Husaini to Kalamazoo for the Mid-East Honors Association's 31st Annual Regional Conference.

Taste of Africa

 
In February, the Meijer Honors College and Housing put together "Taste of Africa," a program aimed to introduce students to African culture and cuisine.  Student Services Coordinator Janaan Decker and student Adam Falk spoke to students and staff about their travels to Ghana, and Kleiner Chef Manager Joe Torres prepared West African dishes for all to enjoy!
