During its peak, a healthy colony of bees will approximately be made up of one queen bee, a hundred or so male drone bees and 30-50 thousand female worker bees.
The Worker Bee
The worker bee, who is always female, handles all matters relating to the well-being of the hive, except for egg-laying.
The Drone Bee
The drone bee, who is always male, is responsible for searching out and mating with a queen.
The Queen Bee
Despite her royal title, the queen bee does not have any power over the colony. Her sole purpose is for the laying of eggs, which at her peak she can do 2,000 times a day.
