One of the goals for the Apiary at the Meijer Campus is to provide opportunities for interdisciplinary studies and research by students and faculty. The construction of the hive and on going data collection is one such opportunity.
In April 2012, two beehives were installed at the Meijer Campus with a solar powered digital scale under one of the hives. The GV Bee Keepers constructed the hives, while Engineering and Computing students developed the solar powered digital scale (known as the BeeCloud Project). This allow us to contribute in NASA's HoneyBeeNet project. At the time of installation, The Apiary at the Grand Valley State University Meijer Campus in Holland is the first apiary in Michigan to contribute to this project.
