Why did you choose to attend Grand Valley?
I chose to attend Grand Valley because educationally it was the next step for me. Grand Valley is the only program that offers the master's degree in social work in the Traverse City area. Attending the program in this area allows me to stay close to my family.

What do you like best about Grand Valley?
One of the things that I like best about Grand Valley is the structure of the social work program in Traverse City. It's a cohort program, which means that a group of students begins the program together and ends the program together. I like the community atmosphere that the program offers.

Have you been able to incorporate your graduate studies into your job? How?
Yes, I have been able to incorporate my graduate studies into my job. Part of social work is about engaging clients and providing them with the information needed to make decisions. My job at the lodge is meeting with people and informing them about activities that the lodge offers for families and children. A lot of interview skills are used when I talk about activities and items that would interest children and families.

How will Grand Valley help you meet your future goals?
My main goal is to become an equine assisted therapist. In equine assisted therapy horses are used as a tool to help clients work through a variety of issues. In order to do that, I need to obtain my M.S.W. before I can become certified to work with horses and clients. GVSU will assist me in obtaining my goals by providing me with the skills and abilities needed to address clients' problems from a clinical aspect.

How has Grand Valley's faculty made a difference in your graduate experience?
Grand Valley's faculty has made a difference in my graduate experience by always being available. Whether it's through email, extended office hours, or Chalk & Wire online support. I know that if I have a question or concern, it will be addressed by someone on staff at GVSU.

What advice would you give to prospective graduate students?
Look into Grand Valley's programs. They offer a variety of programs and time slots that fit various student lifestyles. They really address the needs of students who have families and are already working within the community.
