Case Manager and Mentor at ATLAS Ministry
What GVSU program did you choose and why?
The liberal studies program, it offered me the flexibility that I was really looking for. I have seven children, going on eight grandkids and a job, a lot to juggle, and I wanted to be a full-time student too because once I decided to go back, I just wanted to go for it.
How did GVSU help you get started in your program?
I started by meeting with the student advisor here. She was really helpful to me.
What was the biggest obstacle you had to overcome as a returning student and how did GVSU help you overcome it?
The biggest obstacle was probably my own confidence. A place where differing opinions are encouraged and respected, that's what I found at Grand Valley. That's what I appreciate so much.
What did you like best about your experience at GVSU?
The people. The majority of the people that I've met, whether it's students, staff, or faculty, have really been welcoming and have modeled respect for me and for other students by listening.
How did GVSU help you meet your career goals?
I had a professor tell me about graduate assistantships. There was a lot of help in getting that figured out for me.
What advice would you give to other adult students looking to finish their degree?
You don't have to figure it out on your own. There's a lot of support here, take advantage of it. Go for your dreams because they can happen.
