Holland Sentinel Covers GVSU Holland Green Team Event

Every month a group of staff, students, and faculty members come together to form the Green Team at GVSU Holland. The Green Team has monthly meetings to plan sustainability events and create new concepts on how to share sustainabillty information with students and staff on campus. Here is a list of the Green Team's accomplishments and purpose:
Purpose: Group of faculty, staff, students and community members dedicated to “greening” the Meijer Campus in Holland
What we’ve done/are doing….
· Created a Green Team to address sustainability issues on campus
· Provided recycling bins in all offices, classrooms, labs and study areas
· Installed automatic dimming bulbs in lobby area, using energy efficient lighting and recycling old florescent bulbs
· Adjusted heating and cooling according to occupancy
· Utilizing a rain gauge in irrigation system (once 1/8 rain, no irrigation)
· Ensuring environmentally friendly landscaping: chipping from downed trees, utilizing native Michigan plants
· Using compostable utensils and plates and encouraging the use of glass/ceramic mug
· Ordering recycled office supplies, ordering in bulk to limit the amount of deliveries
· Utilizing local caterers and vendors when possible
· Supporting faculty and students to learn more about sustainability through local resources
· Providing support for “paperless” courses
· Participated in community events such as the Sustainability Film Series and The St. Patrick’s Day “Green” Parade
· Carpooling to events
· Being involved in local and regional initiatives regarding environmental, economic and social justice
· Implemented a sustainable recycling partnership with the Holland Rescue Mission that addresses the triple bottom line
· Initiated an composting program on campus
· Switched to a lower energy using coffee pot
