Domestic Violence and the Workplace

Dennis Potter, CEO Kantu Consultant LLC located in Grand  Rapids, Michigan will engage participants in an interactive workshop exploring domestic violence and the workplace. Participants will leave with the knowledge and the resources available to effectively address the impact to their company or organization's workforce.

Topics include:

•Predictors of possible domestic violence in the work force

•Interventions that can be used effectively with employees

•Significant indicators of a person who might commit violence

•Tools to organize a Threat Assessment Team to effectively respond to domestic violence.

This program is offered free of charge to the community. For social workers needing CEU's for licensing requirements  this will be available on site for $15. Participants are encouraged to bring their lunches.  Beverages and light refreshments will be provided. This Wednesday, Sir Ken Robinson will come to Grand Valley's Allendale campus. He will present and sign books after his presentation.

He is the author of the book titled Element. The book, a New York Times best-seller, draws on stories of celebrities, business leaders, athletes and others to illustrate Robinson’s point that when people arrive at “the element,” they feel most inspired and achieve at their highest levels.

Kirsten Bartels, faculty fellow in the Frederik Meijer Honors College, incorporated The Element into her Liberal Studies and Honors classes before it was selected for CRP. Bartels said while the courses covered different subjects for different student populations, the book served both courses well.

“In the Creativity class, the book was used a way to allow students for self-exploration into their passions and reconnect with their creative sides,” she said. “It inspired them to take some risks.”

Bartels said Honors College students who read the book found it helpful when discussing their goals and potential barriers to achieving those goals.

Robinson will give be on campus Wednesday, March 27, for a presentation sponsored by the Frederik Meijer Lecture Series and CRP. “Leading a Culture of Innovation” will begin at 7 p.m. in the Fieldhouse; doors will open at 6 p.m.

Annette Dennis, who is a department service officer for Disabled American Veterans, will be available to meet with Grand Valley student veterans on Mondays from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. in room 1240 of the Kirkhof Center or by appointment.



Steven Lipnicki, assistant dean of students, said Dennis will be available to help any student veteran gain access to VA health care and assist with filing claims for serviced-connected disabilities. She will also be available to answer questions about other veterans' benefits.



Dennis was an active duty staff sergeant who served in the U.S. Air Force from 1985-1993. She earned a bachelor’s degree in health sciences management and a master’s degree in mental health counseling. She can be contacted at adennis@davmighigan.com or (586) 215-0540.

The GVSU-sponsored production of “Marx in Soho” with Bob Weick returns to the Park on 3/21! Written by historian Howard Zinn, it’s a one-man play based on the life of Karl Marx showing Marx as few people knew him, as a family man, struggling to support his wife and children. The play depicts Marx resurrected to defend the ideals of communism from the dehumanized version of it practiced in the former Soviet Union and to defend humanity from capitalism.

Tickets are now on sale for the GVSU Women’s Center performances of That Takes Ovaries! Bold Women, Brazen Acts on Friday, March 22 in the Grand River Room (Kirkhof Center, GVSU Allendale Campus) and Saturday, March 23 at Wealthy Theatre in Grand Rapids. This play offers an exciting collection of real-life stories from women and girls about the gutsy, outrageous, courageous things they have done. The stories are multicultural, funny, sassy, and touching true tales of estrogen-powered deeds. About half of the scenes in this year’s production includes true stories submitted by our own GVSU campus and community! Both performances start at 7 PM; proceeds benefit the YWCA of West Central Michigan, Center for Women in Transition, and the GVSU Women’s Center. ASL interpreters will be available both nights. The performances are LIB 100 and 201 approved.

GVSU Biomedical Engineering Pulmonary Research Project Seeking Volunteers for Testing

Looking for non-smoking volunteers to test a new diagnostic device that measures pulmonary function. Volunteers with and without asthma or allergies are invited to apply. Qualified participants must be over the age of 18 and have no heart or other lung diseases. Participants enrolled in the study will receive results from their pulmonary function testing at the completion of the study.

 GVSU Holland's campus is hosting a "build your own solar panel" workshop for community members, students, and staff. The event is on April 3rd, 2013. Every participant will get to make their own solar panel with the guidance of professional staff. People can RSVP by calling: 616-394-4848. RSVP today. Seats are limited! The cost is $35 dollars. The cost includes refreshments, the speaker, and all materials needed to make a solar panel. Familes are encouraged to come.

What can the solar panel that you create do?

The solar panel is an 8 Watt panel that is used to power the following: lights, fans, cell phones, portable gaming devices and cameras.
