Campus Traditions
America Recycles
America Recycles Day is the only nationally-recognized day dedicated to promoting and celebrating recycling in the U.S. GVSU Holland works in partnership with the City of Holland and local organizations to educate residents of all ages about recycling resources in our community through collection drives, demonstrations, displays and other special events.
Community Reading Project
The Community Reading Project is an interdisciplinary endeavor among the GVSU campuses and local communities. It is dedicated to providing the highest quality engagement of reading and discussing relevant books. Each March, Herrick District Library and GVSU Holland host a lecture by the author of that year’s book selection, as well as book discussion groups and other related events.
Domestic Violence Awareness Month
Each October, GVSU commemorates Domestic Violence Awareness Month with participation in the Silent Witness Initiative and the Clothesline Project.
The Silent Witness National Initiative was established to promote peace, healing and responsibility in adult relationships in order to eliminate domestic murders. Life-size Silent Witness figures, in remembrance of Michigan women who have died as a result of domestic violence, are placed around the Meijer Campus in Holland. The figures serve to educate and remind people that domestic violence is a real problem happening in our communities.
The Clothesline Project is a vehicle for women affected by violence to express their emotions by decorating a t-shirt. They then hang the shirt on a clothesline to be viewed by others as testimony to the problem of violence against women.
Make a Difference Day
Make a Difference Day is a national day for volunteering held annually on the fourth Saturday of October. Staff, faculty, and students from GVSU Holland, along with their family members, give back to the community by volunteering a few hours at a local organization.
