Prof. Butterfield’s research has focused on modernity’s role in cultural change in the 20th century. He has written and presented on a variety of topics therein, including athletics during the Progressive Era and rural education in the most recent century. His current project looks more closely at the demise of traditional one-room schools in the modern age, work that both suggests the primarily symbolic importance of such schools and lends important insights into the nature of rural culture and values. All such investigations are components of a broader and more potential-laden research goal: to more clearly identify the extent and nature of 20th century modernity’s influence, in its various guises, on American culture.
