What human beings can do, might do, or ought to do makes no sense at all unless we know what they have done already. This involves the study of history. History examines the lives of people, the consequences of ideas, and the ending quest of daily bread. It presents human misfortunes and greatness as well as the struggle for survival. Study of the past reveals valuable achievements as well as dreadful mistakes, and in so doing helps us meet the unexpected challenges of our own day.

The Department of History offers an undergraduate major in History, an undergraduate minor in History, and graduate work for students seeking the Master of Education with a concentration in History. History is a teachable major for students seeking teacher certification in either secondary or elementary education; History is also teachable minor for students seeking teacher certification in secondary education.  History majors who complete the professional program in secondary education offered by GVSU's College of Education are eligible to receive secondary teacher certification in History; those who complete the program in elementary education receive certification in elementary education. History minors who complete a teachable major and the appropriate professional program receive an endorsement in History on their teaching certificates. The Department offers several of the core courses and a concentration in History for students in Social Studies, a program designed for those seeking teacher certification in social studies at either the secondary or elementary levels.
