Q: Is there a driving force behind your healthy lifestyle? Was it a person in your life, a certain event, were you brought up in a healthy environment? What makes you a healthy individual?
A: There are so many people and moments that have brought me to triathlon. First, a friend of mine who taught spin classes, Laura McCormick, encouraged me to try spin and then to do a triathlon as part of a relay team. After that I was hooked, but I did not know how to swim competitively in open water, so I hired a coach, Anne Chrzanowski, who is a certified triathlon coach with Endurance Concepts. Coach Anne helped me complete my first Olympic Distance Triathlon in 2011. Since moving to West Michigan, I have trained for swimming with Griff Griffin and Gabriele Gottlieb, two GVSU faculty members. I also am a member of the Real Women Tri Team - with 100 women members who all inspire me!
Q: How would you encourage another person to pursue a healthy lifestyle?
A: I would say start small and set achievable goals - your first 5k race is always memorable. Preset your calendar with training times blocked in and keep those appointments just like you keep meetings and events scheduled. Be kind to yourself and your body - listen to what it needs to be happy and healthy. Lots of rest and good nutrition make all bodies run more efficiently.
Q: What activities do you engage in to reduce stress?
A: I swim, bike, and run at least 2 times per week. I know that sounds like a lot, but it gives me the energy I need to think better and perform better at work and at home and in life.
