Flexible Work Arrangements

Work-life balance is about people having a measure of control over when, where and how they work. GVSU recognizes the importance of their faculty and staff maintaining this balance to retain a healthy lifestyle. In an effort to maintain this balance, GVSU strives to provide flexible work arrangements, in appropriate areas, that mutually benefit students, the individual, departments, campus and society.

Recognizing the increasing demands that staff and faculty members face in both their personal and work lives, GVSU offers comprehensive flexible work guidelines by providing a website devoted to workplace flexibility that includes a description of various flexible work schedule options; the pros, the cons, guidelines for requesting or implementing workplace flexibility and a Q&A page. Tips are available to assist managers on how to consider a flexible work schedule for their area.

There are many instances of flexible work arrangements at GVSU today, however, flexible work schedules may or may not work in every area of the university. But with the GVSU Workplace Flexibility Toolkit, managers and staff will be able to make an informed decision, within their work area, to determine if workplace flexibility will work for the department and for individual employees.

Faculty and Staff Fitness Classes

As GVSU campus becomes more health-conscious, there has been an increased focus on the importance of exercise. Many people exercise to control weight and get in better physical condition to become more healthy or physically attractive, but exercise and stress management are also closely linked.  That's right, research suggests that physical activity may be linked to lower physiological reactivity toward stress. Simply put, those who get more exercise may become less affected by the stress they face. So, in addition to all the other benefits, exercise may supply some immunity toward future stress as well as a way to cope with current stress; a great reason to become involved in GVSU Faculty and Staff Fitness Classes.
