Angela Amerson

Angela Amerson, Academic Coordinator in Diagnostic and Treatment Sciences at Grand Valley, used to weigh over 340 lbs. When she was young, she continually struggled with her weight and as she grew older she maintained a heavier frame, and continued the upward weight trend. After careful thought and consideration, she decided to take action and undergo Duodenal Switch weight loss surgery. Angela states, “Surgery isn’t an easy way out, it’s a tool that paved the way for important lifestyle changes.”

Angela continues to stay active and eat well to maintain her current state, 200 lbs lighter and feeling healthy. To maintain her weight loss, she was told by her doctor to eat protein and to become active. To increase her activity, Angela started attending the Faculty and Staff Group Exercise Classes. She was a little apprehensive to try Zumba or any group fitness class at first, but soon became a fan. Her weight loss has enabled her to try a variety of new activities. Angela now participates in Zumba, Strength training, Yoga, and has participated in the Fifth Third 5k Community Walk and Stomp out Stigma 5K walk. Her goal is to walk at least 10,000 steps a day and she takes advantage of a track near CHS a few times a week to get in a 2 mile walking workout.

“I took that chance and then I took it step further.”

Angela attributes much of her success to the love and support from her husband David. He loved her at her heaviest and is still by her side no matter what she decides to dive into. Angela and her husband started riding recumbent trikes after her surgery and they use this as a way to spend quality time together while having fun and getting exercise.
