I am an associate professor in the Movement Science department and have been at GVSU since 2009. I have always been passionate about teaching my students how to be quality teachers and to advocate for the health and wellness of children. In March of 2012 I was diagnosed with Stage 2 Triple Negative Breast Cancer. I underwent a double mastectomy, followed by 4 months of chemotherapy. During this time I wanted to start a group at GVSU to help support others dealing with cancer. So I started the Cancer Warriors Network. In July of 2013 I had a recurrence of my TNBC and had a total axillary node dissection- removing 23 lymph nodes from my right armpit- I was then back on more chemotherapy for another 4 months followed by 6.5 weeks of daily radiation treatments. I am now back at work and recovering from all my active treatments.
Cancer can be a challenge and a blessing all at the same time. Watch these videos to see part of my journey. If you need inspiration to help you through the journey, join us at our next Cancer Warriors Network meeting. We can all be warriors! Contact me directly at email@example.com.
