Stay fresh all year long with resources from The Greater Grand Rapids Food Council. Listings for grocery's providing local food and even farmer's markets are listed.
The Farmers Market will return Wednesday, June 6th from 10-1:30. Opening day music will be a 6-person combo that will perform jazz, swing, bebop and a little funk. We will have free smoothies, lots of fresh produce and campus dining will be back again this year serving lunch from 11-1. Lunch for opening day will be: Cucumber Tomato Herbed Gazpacho, Pesto Chicken Wrap & Ice Water. Lunch will be $6.00.
We are happy to announce a new addition to the market this season - Dognip Bones. All natural treats for our beloved pets, and Mike's Processing with assorted meats and meat sticks.
Your returning favorite vendors:
Goen's Produce, Ham's Produce, Barb Zemitus, Happy Jack's Kettle Corn, The Great Bread Co., Engelsma Honey & Apple Cider, Marne Jerky, Frozen Creek Farms, Michigan Butterflies, Maisy's Pie Company, Lindberg Blueberries, Cups of Cake, Healthy Pantry Bars, Farm Country Cheese, Inge's fresh flowers and our GVSU Nursing students.
Why buy local?
- Local foods are fresher and taste better!
- Local foods are seasonal - corn is best in August, not January.
- Local foods have less environmental impact. Less travel means less oil dependency; organic farming means less harmful chemicals and more sustainable farming practices.
- Local foods preserve green space and farmland. When you buy local you are supporting vendors' efforts to continue farming and preserve green space in Michigan.
- Local foods promote safety. The fewer hands that touch your food, the lesser the chance of contamination.
- Local foods promote the local economy. If each Michigan family spent $10 in a farmer's market, the economy would gain $37 million each year.
- Local foods create community. Knowing your food is coming from farms in West Michigan connects you with your neighbors who bring it to you.

People worldwide are rediscovering the benefits of buying local food.
It is fresher than anything in the supermarket and that means it is tastier
and more nutritious. It is also good for your local economy--buying directly
from family farmers helps them stay in business.
