Q: Is there a driving force behind your healthy lifestyle? Was it a person in your life, a certain event, were you brought up in a healthy environment? What makes you a healthy individual? A: Determined to stay fit and healthy for as long as I can. I have loved hiking and climbing mountains since I was a kid. Climbing big mountains is tough, so I need to stay fit and healthy in order to do this as long as I can.
Q: How would you encourage another person to pursue a healthy lifestyle? Tell them they only have one life and that every aspect of it is enhanced through maintaining health and wellness. Eat well, exercise daily, be positive, enjoy the great outdoors in every season, and you will be better able to pursue your life goals and dreams. Plus it is impossible to have a healthy, sharp, intelligent mind unless you have a healthy body. (I say this to my students almost every day).
Q: What activities do you engage in to reduce stress? A: I walk at least one hour a day; I do weights and calisthenics most days of the week; I do aqua aerobics in the GVSU pool at least three times a week; and I hike and climb mountains wherever I am in the world. This August I was in Africa and climbed the two highest mountains in the continent Mt Kenya and Mt Kilimanjaro. Fantastic, and I am nearly 60!
