"In the 20th century, I saw with my own eyes the worst that leaders are capable of.  In the 21st century, I want to encourage the best leadership possible so that the world will be better for my children's children."

~Ralph Hauenstein

Student Testimonials

Petra Alsoofy—Junior political science and group social studies major, and Middle East studies minor; Peter Cook Leadership Academy, 2007-

“The Leadership Academy provides me with a chance to see how leadership works in all fields.  Professionalism is stressed, which is important for students who want practice and preparation for the workforce or for further education."

Patrick Reagan—Director of Downtown Development for the City of Portland, Michigan; Grand Valley State University '06, '08 M.P.A.; Peter Cook Leadership Academy, 2007-2008

"Having the opportunity to work at the Center and to be a Leadership Academy fellow was one of the best experiences of my life.  I think about the leadership lessons I learned at the Hauenstein Center every day of the week.  From interacting with highly regarded scholars to working on numerous programs and projects, I learned lessons during my time at the Hauenstein Center that I find myself applying on a daily basis.  My career involves both public speaking and leading volunteer groups, and I have found the passion that the Center exudes for its work has been a valuable model that I use every day.

"I implore anyone who wishes to be a better leader, a better scholar, or a better citizen to spend some time with Gleaves and the entire staff — it is truly a life-changing experience."

Megan Sall—Director of the Downtown Development Authority for the City of Wyoming; Grand Valley State University '06, M.P.A. Candidate; Peter Cook Leadership Academy Fellow, 2007-

“The Academy has helped me look for leadership opportunities in all aspects of my life....  Being a leadership fellow has also given me increased understanding of the importance of passion, perseverance, and patience."

Dan Reed—Social studies teacher; Grand Valley State University '09; Peter Cook Leadership Academy, 2007-2009

“No other association has provided me with more opportunities to grow and learn than the Hauenstein Center's Leadership Academy.”

Sarah Gosline—Professional dance instructor; Grand Valley State University '08; Peter Cook Leadership Academy, 2007-08

"The Hauenstein Center was an invaluable resource for me.  I didn't know for most of my undergraduate career how much the Hauenstein Center had to offer, but in Mr. Whitney and his staff I discovered a treasure trove of knowledge.  The staff was always willing to help students find solid, scholarly resources in the Hauenstein library.  I also took part in several events they organized.  The center provided us students with a chance to work together on common interests outside of class, but still in an academic setting.  Overall the Hauenstein Center added a lot to my experience as a student at Grand Valley State University.

"I learned more at the Hauenstein Center in one year than I did in the rest of my career at Grand Valley.  It took me out of the textbook and put me in real professional situations."
