Join Grand Valley's Hauenstein Center for Presidential Studies and the Center for Michigan for three different townhall opportunities to discuss Michigan's future.
Description: In partnership with the Center for Michigan, the Hauenstein Center is convening Community Conversations around the topic "Michigan’s Defining Moment (MDM)." This bipartisan statewide effort is driven by more than 1,800 experienced leaders seeking to move Michigan to a new era of prosperity.
These conversations will be one of hundreds across Michigan between now and mid-2010. MDM is a nonpartisan, nonprofit effort to reinvigorate citizenship, get people talking about Michigan’s challenges and opportunities, and develop a common ground agenda to help guide the decisions of state and local leaders. MDM composed its first report after holding 180 Community Conversations all across Michigan. This report focused on three major needs of our state: 1) A talented, globally competitive workforce; 2) A vibrant economy and great quality of life; and 3) Effective, efficient, and accountable government.
In the current political climate, the public’s voice is even more important as Michigan braces for deepening state and national economic challenges. In 2010, all of Michigan’s top elected posts and many of the seats in the Legislature will change hands due to term limits. MDM doesn’t seek to elect candidates of any particular party. Instead, MDM works to heighten citizen dialogue and build a pragmatic, solutions-oriented agenda for the state’s future – with action items that can be taken up by Democrats and Republicans alike.
In these Community Conversations, MDM will use interactive polling devices to vote on issues and discuss economic, education, and good governance strategies. They will also share examples of best practices in our own communities.
