It is the intent of this three hour introductory R.A.D. Awareness Seminar, taught to women only, to empower them through self-awareness and discussions about basic fundamentals of prevention and self-defense.
Participants will also be exposed to basic information about crimes that take place on campus, crime prevention methods, and basic self-defense techniques. The emphasis of this seminar will be on the crime of sexual assault.
The Rape Aggression Defense System is a program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women. The R.A.D. System is a comprehensive, women-only course that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and risk avoidance, while progressing on to the basics of hands-on defense training. R.A.D. is not a Martial Arts program. Our courses are taught by nationally certified R.A.D. Instructors and provide each student with a workbook/reference manual. The entire R.A.D. class can also be taught at GVSU and consists of at least 13 hours of instruction.
The ideal location for this program is an area that can accommodate the number of anticipated participants with a minimal number of distractions. Classroom settings work well, if there is sufficient space for demonstrating and practicing physical self-defense techniques. Living center great rooms or community rooms are appropriate in some buildings. It is imperative that these are closed sessions accessible to women only. It should not be possible for men (except for instructors) to intentionally or inadvertently enter or view the training area.
Program request should be made within a minimum of two weeks from the date of the event. Preplanning for events is highly encouraged. Last minute requests may not be accommodated. Advertisement for the program will be the responsibility of those who request the program. Posters, mailbox inserts, and face-to-face invitations are highly encouraged. The advertisement should stress that the class is designed for women only. Organizers of the event should be educated that we will also present self-defense classes in which men would be invited to participate, but R.A.D. presentations are restricted to women only.
