Grand Valley President Thomas J. Haas has given up the razor during November, or rather, "Movember."

Haas and four other West Michigan leaders have joined Blue Cross/Blue Shield’s Executive Stache-Off. To honor November as Men’s Health Awareness Month, the contestants are encouraged to grow mustaches.

Others in the Executive Stache-Off are

• Jeff Connolly, president of West Michigan Operations and Managed Care for BCBSM

• Jeff Lambert, president and managing partner for Lambert Edwards & Associates

• Brian Pangle, president and CEO of Clark Retirement Community

• Jerry Kooiman, assistant dean of external relations for the MSU College of Human Medicine.

Read more about the competition here. Voters will choose a winner based on photos posted to the website.

Haas said he wore a full beard 35 years ago, although now admitted that when his mustache grows in, it will be white.
