New director named for Community Research Institute at Johnson Center for Philanthropy

Grand Valley State University’s Johnson Center for Philanthropy has selected Jerry Johnson to serve as the new director of the center’s Community Research Institute (CRI). 

Johnson’s official starting date as director will be October 6; he has served as the interim director for the past year.

Johnson came to Grand Valley in 1997 as an assistant professor, where he earned tenure and was promoted to associate professor in the School of Social Work. Prior to joining GVSU, he served as the director of adolescent services at Project Rehab in Grand Rapids and was the director at the Center for Family Development.

Johnson has more than 30 years of experience in the human services as a practitioner, administrator, consultant and trainer. He has worked abroad as a consultant to USAID and UNDP, and was twice recognized as a Fulbright Scholar. He has written and edited 10 books and several articles and has extensive experience in community and applied research and evaluation in the U.S. and internationally.
