Fleischmann honored for service learning
Fleischmann has been designated by peers as the faculty/staff person on campus who made the most outstanding contributions in the area of community service-learning. This award recognizes the influence on or engagement of students to be involved in community service or service-learning through modeling, instruction, and/or special projects.
Fleischmann has been the driving force behind service-learning for engineering students at Grand Valley. Under her leadership, students designed and built a playroom for children at the Mel Trotter Ministries, implemented a Bikes for Kids program, developed a partnership with Sibley Elementary School to enhance its science curriculum, and conducted energy surveys in a local neighborhood. Through the years, Fleischmann has secured grants to support service-learning projects, and has presented to her engineering colleagues nationally on its value.
